JOB DESCRIPTION
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Staff iOS Engineer is responsible for providing technical leadership across our iOS and tvOS platforms. In this role, you’ll architect scalable mobile solutions, influence the long-term technical direction of the platform, and partner closely with Product, Design, Backend, and Editorial teams to deliver applications used by millions of users.
As a Staff Engineer, you’ll set technical direction through architecture, mentorship, and engineering standards. You’ll also identify opportunities to improve developer workflows through automation and internal tooling. This is a unique opportunity to join an ambitious mobile team using agentic workflows to build and ship high-quality features at lightning speed!
A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Architect and implement major features across the FOX News iOS and tvOS applications.
- Drive the technical strategy for the mobile platform, including modularization, build system performance, developer tooling, and long-term platform evolution.
- Mentor and grow senior and mid-level engineers through technical leadership, code reviews, pair programming, and architectural guidance.
- Partner with Product, Design, Backend, and Editorial teams to define requirements, evaluate technical trade-offs, and deliver mobile features.
- Own application performance, reliability, observability, and crash-free rate targets across the iOS and tvOS platforms.
- Lead the adoption of modern Apple frameworks and APIs, including SwiftUI, Swift Concurrency, WidgetKit, Live Activities, and CarPlay where applicable.
- Design and maintain shared component libraries, networking layers, dependency injection infrastructure, and reusable platform services.
- Evaluate and integrate third-party SDKs—including analytics, advertising, video, and community platforms—with an emphasis on stability, performance, privacy, and minimal application footprint.
- Establish engineering standards for architecture, automated testing, CI/CD, release management, and code quality.
- Identify opportunities to build internal developer tools and automations, including AI-powered solutions where appropriate, to improve engineering workflows.
- Contribute to incident response, root-cause analysis, and production triage for mobile-specific issues while driving long-term platform reliability improvements.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- 7+ years of professional iOS development experience, including at least 2 years operating as a Staff Engineer, Technical Lead, or in a comparable technical leadership role.
- Expert-level proficiency in Swift, including modern concurrency (async/await, actors, structured concurrency).
- Deep experience architecting, building, and shipping large-scale consumer applications on the App Store.
- Strong understanding of iOS application architecture, including MVVM, Coordinator patterns, modular and multi-target project structures, dependency injection, and scalable application design.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools (such as Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, OpenCode or similar) to support software development and improve engineering productivity.
- Proven track record of leading cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring engineers across multiple experience levels.
- Experience with video playback, streaming technologies, and media frameworks on Apple platforms.
- Strong experience with XCTest, XCUITest, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing strategies, and release management.
- Demonstrated ability to build developer tooling or automation that improves team efficiency.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical decisions and influence stakeholders across engineering and business teams.
- Regular, on-site attendance at the workplace a minimum of 3 days per week is an essential function of the position. Selected candidate must be able to reliably meet this requirement.
NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT A DEALBREAKER
- Experience building internal developer platforms, engineering productivity tools, or workflow automations.
- Experience with Swift Package Manager and maintaining modular codebases.
- Familiarity with Apple’s latest frameworks and platform capabilities.
- Experience working in digital media, publishing, or content-driven consumer applications.
