JOB DESCRIPTION
Senior Planning Editor
FOX Television Stations is seeking a powerhouse Senior Planning Editor to bridge the newsrooms of KTVU (San Francisco) and KTTV (Los Angeles) on both stations' FOX LOCAL streaming platforms. This is a high-impact, regional leadership role designed to synchronize coverage across California’s two largest markets.
At the intersection of our California operations, you will ensure that our FOX LOCAL apps, social platforms, and streaming broadcasts are the premier destinations for live breaking news across the state.
About the Role
The Senior Planning Editor blends the urgency of a newsroom editorial lead with the strategic vision of a digital program manager. You are a logistical wizard who doesn't just watch the news—you anticipate where it’s going next.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Programming: Developing and maintaining a comprehensive regional calendar, identifying high-interest live events, court proceedings, and breaking news opportunities in both SF and LA.
Cross-Market Coordination: Acting as the primary liaison between KTVU and KTTV. You will ensure that the streaming team in SF is perfectly synced with the editorial priorities of the LA desk, and vice-versa.
Resource Management: Evaluating and deploying shared assets, including LiveU/TVU technology, field crews, and digital-only signals, to ensure maximum coverage efficiency across both markets.
Workflow Optimization: Refining the hand-off process between markets during extended breaking news cycles, high-speed chases, or statewide events like elections and wildfires.
Regional Storytelling: Identifying opportunities for "California-wide" live specials or simulcasts, managing the pre-planning and operational strategy to drive audience growth.
Quality Control: Maintaining the high standards of the FOX brand, ensuring that regional branding, graphics, and metadata (titles, thumbnails, tags) are optimized for reach across CTV, YouTube, and social platforms.
Real-Time Leadership: Monitoring scanners, wires, and social feeds to provide seamless collaboration between linear, streaming, and digital teams at both stations’ newsroom.
Ideal candidates will have:
5+ years of experience in a digital newsroom or assignment desk, with at least 2 years in a leadership or planning capacity.
Regional Expertise: Deep familiarity with the news landscapes, geography, and political climates of both Northern and Southern California.
Technical Literacy: A firm grasp of streaming and newsroom workflows.
Exceptional Judgment: Strong journalistic ethics and the ability to make split-second decisions on which "live" event takes priority for a regional audience.
Communication Mastery: The ability to manage stakeholders in two different cities simultaneously while remaining calm under the pressure of a fast-moving newsroom.
Flexibility: Availability to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours, with the ability to travel between SF and LA as the job requires.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred.
If you believe breaking news doesn’t end at the live shot—and you have the vision to unite California’s two biggest markets into one powerhouse unit—we want to hear from you.
